Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising

Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising

"Remember if you have an uneven skin texture to start with you will have an uneven makeup to finish with." - Morris, 2008, Pg 18

You will need...

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Moisturiser
  • Cotton Pads
  • Cotton Buds

During todays practical lesson we learnt how to effectively remove make-up and prep the skin for make-up application. The four main steps of skincare before the application of make-up is cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturising, we have not been focusing on exfoliating the skin as this should be done the night before, as it brings up redness in the skin.

Cleansing is done to get rid of all the excess dirt on the face, this could be left over make-up or dirt that is on the surface of the skin, this is essential to do prior to your make-up as you want to start on a blank canvas when applying make-up, the excess make-up on the face could bleed into your base or grubby bits will show up on camera. When cleansing a mans face always use tissue, as using cotton pads gets stuck in all of the stubble on a mans face.

Toning gets rid of the excess grease on the skin from the cleanser and also any dirt and debris and also makes the skin ready for moisturiser.

Moisturising helps restore the skins natural moisture and makes it more soft and supple, when applying moisturiser check if you are using a water based or an oil based foundation as applying an oil based moisturiser and a water based foundation wont work and your base wont last.

Before you start cleansing the face make sure you was your hands thoroughly, then move the hair out of the face with sectioning clips. Ask the person you are working on if they have any allergies or if they wear contact lenses as this can affect your method or what products you are using. Using sweeping motions cleanse the face until it is clear, make sure you do not press to hard, if it is tricky to get mascara off don't be afraid to ask the person to have a go themselves because they will know what pressure they need to use, make sure you get around the eyes with a cotton bud. After this step you need to tone using the same technique. To moisturise use a pea sized amount of product, less I more and massage into the face. The face should now be clear of make-up and ready for application.

When cleansing toning and moisturising we were told to stand behind the person we were working on and work by looking in the mirror, this was a completely different method to what I had been thought and I found it so hard to coordinate my hands to my eyes,  I need to practice this technique to become more comfortable with it.

**HEALTH AND SAFETY**

  • Check if the person is  wearing contacts
  • Check if the person has any allergies
  • Use only sensitive products
