Base Application

Base Application

You Will Need...
  • Kryolan Foundation Palette
  • Dermacolour Palette
  • Kabuki Brush
  • Flat Foundation brush
  • Small brush for round eyes
  • Illamasqua loose powder
  • Powder puffs
  • Skincare products

When applying the base, the colour should be barely there, this is how you get the best match for a foundation, it wants to look like skin.

The foundation used needs to be matched to the tones of the skin for example yellow, pink or neutral, this will need to be judged prior to the application, if the skin has a variety of tones as many do, you need to match the colour to the tone that is more prominent.

When you are applying foundation use a powder puff or cotton pad to rest on the face, this will make it more comfortable to apply the foundation but will also avoid the make-up coming off due to the body heat of your fingers touching the face. To start apply a primer onto the face, this can either be a matte primer or a satin primer depending on the desired look you want to create, and optionally you can also mix the primer in with the foundation to change the formula. To apply the foundation use the back of the hand as a palette and start applying the foundation from the middle of the face outwards, to apply the foundation I used the flat foundation brush to distribute the product then buffed it out with the duo fibre brush, then I went in with the dermacolour palette to conceal any redness, blemishes or under eye bags, making sure to warm the product up on the back of your hand before applying to the models face (make sure your hands are clean.) It is better to apply concealer after foundation as if you apply concealer before, applying and buffing the foundation after will move the product about and disturb the base, also if you apply the foundation first you will use less product as you will only need to apply concealer where the foundation is lacking coverage, and this will make foundation look more like skin. Then the foundation needs to be powdered to be set, make sure that before you powder that you will not be applying any more cream products, and remember to set the eyelids and under the eyes as these areas can be naturally oily and prone to creasing.

After Base Application
If you need continuity, write down the mix of foundations to make sure that you get the same colours all the time, and also for health and safety reasons, make sure you scrape the foundation out with a spatula and never double dip, this can contaminate the make-up and will pass on infections.

When applying the base be aware of the surroundings that you will be working in, do you need to use a waterproof base? Will there be flash photography? Do they need protection from the sun? All of these things need to be thought about to get the best longevity out of your base, also keep in mind to get the foundation right under the nose if the camera is up close, or to blend down the neck if needed.
