London Trip

London Trip

As a part of our independent study we went to London to go to the National Portrait Gallery and also to have a tour of the new MAC Carnaby Street store.

We started at the National Portrait Gallery where we went round the tudor sections and saw the portraits that we have been studying in the flesh, it was amazing to see the size of these portraits and it really hit home how much time and effort would have gone into them, up close you can see every brush stroke and every intricate detail that has been painted on. The image that visually engaged me was the coronation portrait this image immediately stood out to me, it shows the Queen being crowned, wearing the cloth of gold that was previously worn by Mary I.

The main symbols in the portrait is the  crown, orb and sceptre these are all symbols of her authority as the queen. You can tell from the portrait that she is young as her hair is worn loose, this is a symbol of virginity and is worn by younger women, when they become more marriageable their hair is worn in more in updo's, her clothes are very bright and elaborate and are adorned with jewels, so it is clear that she is very wealthy, so even if she wasn't crowded in the image you would still be able to tell she was queen. Although this is a very striking portrait, I will not be using it as my inspiration for my contemporary makeup.

We also got a private tour of the new Carnaby Street store, it was really good because we got to talk with the make-up artists, sort out our pro cards, got told about the products that they recommend to be kit essentials and we also got 35% Discount!!! I bought some treats for me, and also some essential things for my kit including
  • Strobe Cream
  • Editorial Oranges Lip Pallette
  • Fix +
  • Powder Blush in Peaches
  • Powder Blush in Sculpt
  • Paint Pot in Soft Ochre
  • Pro Longwear Concealer
  • Cream Colour Base in Luna

The reason I bought these things is because for my Elizabethan portrait I want to focus on the skin, they suggested strobe cream because of what a beautiful moisturiser and highlight it is, I will mix this with my foundations to get a really dewy finish, I bought fix plus to add to the dewy finish, and so I can set the make-up and use powder products over the base then revive it with the fix plus. My favourite buy was Editorial Oranges, this lip palette just screamed Elizabethan to me and I cant wait to play with it during my practices.
