Elizabeth Brydges My Lady in Waiting

Elizabeth Brydges My Lady in Waiting

For my lady in waiting I have chosen to base my design on Elizabeth Brydges, she was a high ranking baron who owned a lot of land and was the daughter to Giles Brydges and she became a lady in waiting to the queen at a young age. She was also the queens maid of honour and was at court in 1603 when Queen Elizabeth died and consequently was included in Queen Elizabeth's funeral procession.
Elizabeth has been identified with Essex who showed her a lot of attention which offended the queen. In October (1602) it was proposed for Elizabeth to marry Grey, but he became the 5th lord Chandos and the controversy was compounded. Immediately after she married Sir John Kennedy, she left her husband and she died deserted and in poverty.

The reason I have chosen to base my new Elizabethan design on Elizabeth Brydges is because of the amount of sadness in her story.  I will base my makeup design around this, she has lost a lot in her life, her husbands, her job and she has pretty much been left with nothing, I want to portray her greif through makeup. Some ideas I have had for doing this are;

  • Sweaty glossy skin
  • Tears
  • Contouring to represent skull
  • Dirty hands or nails
  • Posed in a crumpled fashion, looking small in comparison.
  • Dark makeup, in mourning for her wealth, queen and lost loves.
Backstory

My back story for Elizabeth bridges was that she grew up with a taste for the finer things in life, fine clothing, fine jewellery and a love for men that would often get her in trouble. For many of her years she has lived seeming loyal to her queen, but is jealous of all the things that she has. Due to this jealousy she intends on stealing her riches and the men that the queen is involved with. However following the queens death she is left with nothing, and without all the status and jewels she is trying to hold on to what she once had, but is getting crippled by the grief of her lost loves and riches, my makeup design will represent her decline into this.
